Absa Mauritius, in partnership with the Blanchard Institute, launched the Student Leadership Program for 45 young people aged between 14 and 19 with the aim of creating a dynamic and inclusive future for young Mauritians, empowering them to thrive.
Launched in August 2023, this programme, dedicated to the children and families of Absa Mauritius’ employees, has provided an opportunity to the participants to develop crucial leadership qualities such as resilience, perseverance, self-confidence and communication skills. The six-hour long programme teaches young people to overcome obstacles, persevere in the face of challenges in their professional and personal lives, and inspire others to do the same. Since its launch, three sessions have taken place, all led by Yogen Soobarah, Head of People and Culture and Varoun Jeewooth, Head of Leadership, Learning and Talent at Absa Mauritius.
"This approach is in line with our vision: Empowering Africa's tomorrow, together... one story at a time and reinforces our commitment to making a positive impact within our communities. We recognise the importance of equipping our young people with a range of skills, knowledge and attitudes in line with employers' requirements, thus ensuring their employability in an ever-changing African continent. Through programmes like the Student Leadership Programme, we aim to support them and contribute to the creation of a more diverse and inclusive society," explains Yogen Soobarah, Head of People and Culture at Absa Mauritius.
As part of the Student Leadership Programme, a graduation ceremony was held on 13 December 2023 at Royal Green, Moka. The event, which marked a significant milestone in the development journey of these 45 young people, highlighted their remarkable transformations through their outstanding experiences. "The Student Leadership Programme has enabled me to acquire new skills and cultivate a growth mindset. I used to say 'I can't', but now I'm saying 'I can't...' yet" testifies Aizah Chadun, one of the graduates from the programme.
As a bank, our social commitment goes beyond financial services and we aspire to be active creators of sustainable initiatives, seeking to make a long-term difference. As part of this commitment, Absa Mauritius intends to bring back the Student Leadership Programme this year and explore new initiatives that will offer young Mauritians opportunities that will contribute positively to their well-being and their future.
