Oil on canvas - 2019

This artwork is from Anne Maggs' 2019 solo exhibition in the Absa Gallery, entitled "I AM". The exhibition focused on who we are, who we perceive ourselves to be, and who others perceive us to be, especially as women. As women, we are a myriad of things, as uniquely depicted by the big I AM, to fulfill a specific purpose in the universe. Yet we are hardly aware of the special place we hold and who we are at core. We allow others' judgements to cloud who we are and who we can be. We are let down by society, based on who others perceive us to be. In a more brutal way, we, as women, judge ourselves based on those judgements.
